Go tree-free with our hand-bound Lokta notebooks
These beautiful handmade journals contain approximately 50 sheets (100 pages) of paper with the natural texture unique to lokta paper. Each piece in this collection is ethically handmade by female artisans in Nepal .
Nepali kagaj , or Nepalese paper, is a handcrafted paper indigenous to Nepal. Locally called " lokta ," it is made from the bark of the Daphne papyrus plant, which grows only above 2,000 meters in the Himalayas. During the process, only the inner bark is removed, while the root system remains intact and regenerates – making this paper a completely sustainable resource .
Techniques such as screen printing with water-based paint are used for the patterns and designs, after which these sheets also dry in the sun.The dried sheets are then cut and bound. A colored, textured sheet is glued onto a thicker layer for the cover, while the natural paper forms the inner pages. Finally, each book is hand-bound for an elegant finish.
